I'm going to begin English Language and Culture at university in september and I want to prepare a bit for the kind of literature I will need to read when I'm studying that. It's been a while since I've read proper English books.
Does anyone have a suggestion of what I can read that is actually an interesting story but still proper literature?

It doesn't seem so long ago that I was sad that Ali lost to Selby last year at the Crucible and now he's in the semi-finals winning against Perry, I'M SO HAPPY!

Or did I just jinx it, I certainly hope not! :(

Also, I'm happy that I don't feel like I'm the only Ali Carter fan anymore. ^^

I still find that ‘what makes a book a classic’ stuff bullshit. Why put a sticker on a book and call it a classic, you could put that sticker on a shitty book and suddenly everyone should read it in secondary school because it’s a classic. Classic is such a relative word, how do you define ‘classic’? Everyone likes different books, and WHO exactly gives books that sticker, ‘classic’? Also, all Dutch ‘classic’ adult books seem to be focused on the many ways people can have sex. Some people might remember my rants about the so called classic book I had to read in my literature class a few years ago about a boy having sex with a Canadian soldier in the second world war. Now, English classics and how my teacher at uni thinks it’s so great to read these to children. For a few weeks now, we Dutch girls have been having a discussion on why read old classics to children in primary school. This guy tells us that he encourages his students to read Shakespeare and Jane Eyre to children in primary school. SHAKESPEARE. JANE EYRE. Why the hell would I do that? These books are old, the language is horrible and lastly, it’s not even written for children! So we told him that we would not use those books for reading to children. The teacher looks really offended and said: “So you would not read Pride and Predjudice to your year 4 class?” No fkn way. In what age is this guy living? Why is Shakespeare, Jane Eyre etc allowed when you can't fucking read Harry Potter books (which are so much better to use in the classroom due to language, imagination and values) because it might offend the church?

Classics. Meh.

Theatre [Apr. 28th, 2008|11:38 pm]

I am going to Equus tomorrow and I have seats very near the stage, which is awesome. Due to me being a full-time student here I got tickets with a 50% discount so the tickets weren't even that expensive. It's a very serious play, and not at all what I'm used to with the lovely musicals I go to here, but I love theatre so it should all work out.

Also, my sleep cycle has now completely been turned over due to too much late nights going out and working on essays. I've been trying to get it to normal but it's so easy getting into a different sleep cycle, but getting out of it it harder than I thought!

Since someone pointed out to me I've only posted once in 11 months, I decided to write up something. :P

Anyway, lots has happened since I seriously posted in here the last time. My current living place is Bradford, UK. I'm studying here for a few months, and so far I'm really enjoying it. The college here is extremely easy though, and that annoys me to no end. Everything I learn here I know already, and the classes I really enjoy is ART <3 and academic geography (which is about the annoying subject of global warming, but I enjoy it anyway.

When I came here I didn't have lots of stuff and clothes with me, and that's sad. :( Since I went by plane I couldn't take lots with me. I'm slowly buying more clothes and such to fill that gap though, haha.

I was thinking about going to Equus, it's playing here in a few months. I'm trying to get a friend to go with me, but I might have to go alone, hee hee.

I don't think I did New Years' resolutions this year, and I don't think I'll be making them this year. With things like that, I think they only work when you are 100% behind them and I can't be 100% for stuff I said because 'well it's new years so I'll have to get resolutions!'

So I have a superb day today :p

First, I wake up waaaaaaay too early and I can't sleep, then I go to uni at 7.45am and I find out that the final I have today was moved to 11.30am. aargh :( My final went well enough, I suppose. The reason my whole day was not boring as hell (thank you MT, webs :P) I annoyed some people on msn for
a short while, and the rest of my time was spent listening to:

"What is a light box?"
A lightbox is a device that every artist should have access to. It might just save your life. Like when my green marker threw up on the picture I was working on yesterday, if I had had to start over completely from scratch, I would have killed myself. Thankfully my classroom had a light box to save me from that fate!
It has a bright light behind a glass surface. You place the image you want to trace and the paper you want to trace onto on the glass surface. The light shines through both papers and lets you see the original image through the paper you're tracing onto, even thick paper like bristol board.
So all I had to do was put a fresh sheet of paper over my green-blotched picture and re-trace the lineart. From there I was able to re-ink it and color it as if the accident had never happened. I did lose some time, but not nearly as much as if I had had to start from scratch.
